I was born and have lived in New England all of my life and because of this blessing, I have come to love each season for its own unique qualities!!  BUT, if I’m totally honest with you, I LIVE for summer!!  I’m a teacher and a lover of the sun, so as soon as I’m able, I hit the beach, garden at noon, and exercise outdoors.  I can’t get enough of the hot temperatures and the greenery around me!!  The only problem is my body hasn’t seen the sun for 9 months, the bugs are out, and I’m super picky with what I use on my skin.  I’ve been down the hormonal imbalance road and it stinks!  So, what’s a pasty-white girl to do???  DIY, of course!  If you don’t know by now, I love me some easy, effective DIY products!  I’m going to share with you below a few different recipes that I can’t live without for summer-time fun!

Nothing like being outside walking in the woods and having mosquitoes buzzing in your ears or deer fly landing and biting...NOT!  Like I said, I really hate to use chemical products on my skin, but I also want my products to work!  If you haven’t tried essential oils as a bug deterrent, I highly recommend giving them a try.  One thing you need to know about essential oils and your body is that what works for my body might not work for yours and vice versa.  When I share recipes, I try my best to offer you my favorite combinations and what works for me and for the general population.  If you try a blend and it doesn’t give you the result you were looking for, try another blend or switch out an oil for another one.  The cool thing about essential oils is that they are multifunctional due to their chemical make-up and if you’re willing to experiment, you can usually find the best one/combination of oils specifically for your body!  The more I read about and use essential oils, I am able to hone in on the oils that work best for me.  So I say this to encourage you to learn about your body and what works for you!!

*Safe for everyone in your family!

Apply every hour to two hours.

(**Essential Oils require more applications than other synthetic-based products**)

Of course even if I apply my homemade bug spray, I’ve gotten a bite or two.  When you are outdoors a lot, bugs become part of the landscape...and so doesn’t things like poison ivy, oak, and sumac.  After a full day of hiking out in the woods or doing yard work, I love to apply an itchy skin salve to soothe irritated and itchy skin.  Here’s a great soothing skin salve that takes minutes to make, easy to apply and gives quick relief.

If you’ve been to New England, you know our coast is absolutely stunning and the summer brings lots and lots of people to vacation here.  One of my favorite things to do with my kids since they were little is a beach day!  We pack up the car with an umbrella and beach chairs, snacks & drinks, sand toys and shovels and hit the beach as early as we can and stay til late afternoon.  It’s a once a week summahtime must-do and of course there’s an ice cream stop on the way home.  Although we are pretty good about applying sunscreen (all-natural, of course) there are times when our skin needs a little after sun love.  Something cooling, soothing, and luxurious!!!  Try out the recipe below and tell me what you think!  If you don’t have all the oils, use the ones you have on hand!!

Sun Protection Hair Spray

Let’s not forget about those luscious locks!  I will admit, I color my hair and a few years ago, I switched to a salon that uses conscious coloring with less chemicals, better for you and the environment.  It’s a bit of a longer drive, but my hair & scalp are SO much happier now and my body isn’t burdened by all those chemicals.  It really is worth looking into and if you live in Massachusetts, check out Verde Salon in Braintree...I just love it there!!  Making sure my color stays true when I’m out in the sun I spray this into my hair and when I can I wear a hat.

Ahem!  Sunscreen??

I have a feeling you are probably wondering where the sunscreen DIY recipe is...if you are looking to try your hand at DIY sunscreen, please take a look at the Wellness Mama’s Blog post linked here!  To be honest, I haven’t tried it, but I have teammates who use DIY sunscreen and love it!  Because I like convenience and toxin-free, I use Blue Lizard or Beautycounter mineral based sunblock.  Because I am so low in Vitamin D (Hello Northeast!)I tend to wait a bit to apply sunscreen (about 15-30 minutes, depending on the time of day and if I’m in direct sunlight).  BUT, you do YOU!
